Leg Swelling

Leg swelling or edema can be caused by a number of factors.  If the source of the swelling is from fluid retention from diet, heart or kidney problems, the swelling tends to be equal in both legs.  Advanced leg swelling or unequal swelling can be caused by varicose vein disease or lymphatic disease or lymphedema.  A comprehensive physical examination and diagnostic testing will be required to make the diagnosis.  Leg swelling can be managed medically: with medications, compression, massage or mechanical compression devices.  Varicose vein treatment may also be required.
